What Does it Mean to Seek God?

What Does it Mean to Seek God? How is this Accomplished?

Written by Micheal Jolicoeur

Seek God!  his was the response to difficult questions when I was a young believer in Christ. It was a great and true answer. However, the answer “Seek God” led to more questions like, what does it mean to seek God? How is it done? What does it look like? I will attempt to answer these questions in this blog. Hopefully, this will help you better understand what seeking God is about.

Seek God! What Does it Mean?
To Seek God means to search, strive after, desire, endeavor, or inquire.  Have you ever lost something you valued or lost someone you loved? Maybe you lost keys, a wallet, jewelry, a phone.  Maybe you lost contact with someone or messed up in a relationship and it could not be salvaged. Imagine your mental and emotional state while looking for that valued item. How disappointed and hurt you will feel if you do not find what you are looking for. Remember the feeling at the loss of a relationship (the one that got away).

When we seek after God, we search for Him as we are looking for something of great value. We search with great fervor, anticipation, and expectation. The sad thing is we may not find what we are looking for.  However, God promises that we will find Him when we search for Him with all our heart. There is no guarantee that we will find that lost precious item or valued relationship. Only God makes the promise to be found by us.

How is it Done?
When we seek after God He promises to be found or be there.  However, in scripture there are conditions.  God is to be sought with sincerity and no ulterior motive.
Deuteronomy 4:29 But from there you will seek the Lord your God and you will find him if you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul.
God is not trying to hide from us.  He wants to be there for us.  Nevertheless, God will not accept anything less than our whole hearts. God knows when we pray for what we can get and not want Him.
We also need to seek him first and not in anxiety. God knows our needs before we ask.  God wants to be the priority of our lives.
Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
When seeking God, it is done in humility and submission.  James 4:6-10 6 But he gives more grace. Therefore, it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
We are not to approach God in pride or a sense of entitlement. God does not owe us anything.  He gave His only son and that was more than enough.

What Does it look like?
When people want to get to know each other they spend time with each other. Hopefully, before this happens, the man can mustard up enough courage to pursue the woman by asking for her name and phone number.  The fear of rejection is real. After getting her name and number. You will begin to talk and spend time.  The more time they spend together the more they know about each other and hopefully the more they love one another.  So on and so on.  These elements of building a relationship are like seeking God and growing in our relationship with Him. One difference is that God was pursuing us we were not pursuing Him. He was the initiator of this relationship. Psalms 53:2 says no one seeks after God.  Romans 5:8 talks about while still sinner God Died for us. The more we spend time with God seeking Him through the bible and prayer, the more we get to know and love Him.  When we seek God first in our decision-making, read the Word of God, and pray the more, we get to know and trust Him.
I hope this has been a help to you and that you would seek God with sincerity (wholeheartedly).  Remember, God makes a promise that if we draw close to Him, He will draw close to us.
