Faith: What Holds it All Together

Hebrews 11:1 - “Now faith is the substance of things hope for, the evidence of things not seen.”
This scripture has been a very frequently quoted scripture whenever a Believer speaks about faith, but for the everyday person this may not resonate. I think in this season of my life, I like to look at things in ways that will bring everyone to the table and hopefully to the same destination. I look at faith as that super substance that holds everything together. You may or may not agree, but please allow me to explain.

Faith is officially defined as “complete confidence or trust in someone or something”; “strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof”. Whatever your belief is in life, whether you consider yourself a Believer or if you are the master of your own fate, we all have faith. We see it in action in on a daily basis as it is lived out in how we function as individuals and as a society as a whole. We work a job and have faith that we will get paid. We put our money in a bank or other financial product and have faith that it will be there when we want or need it. We sit in countless number of chairs and have faith that they will hold us with no questions asked. So, the question really becomes: what do you put most of your faith in?

I encourage you my brothers young and mature to put your faith in someone that is greater than yourself. When I say greater, I’m not saying another person with a bigger bank account or more degrees or more things than you possess. While those are commendable, they are not reliable. All of those things are built on a worldly system set up by flawed men like you and I. I want you to put your faith in the one that created everything and can hold it all together. I am talking about the God of the universe.

In the coming weeks and months, take time every day to strengthen your faith. How do I do that you might ask. I’m glad you asked. Hebrews 11:6 says “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who come to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” Well, our faith in God is a personal thing and while there is no “magic formula,” the scriptures tells us in Romans 10:17 “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message through the word of Christ.” So, it is safe to say that hearing a sound message of the gospel is one way to increase your faith. Find a good bible teaching church that will encourage you in your journey.

Secondly, I would say that prayer is a great way to increase your faith, with the understanding that God hears your prayer, but the answer is not always what you may want and not when you want it. Just as any good father knows what’s best for his children, all the more our Heavenly Father knows what we need and gives it to us in His timing. Lastly, I would say that you do your best to surround yourself with people that will build you up and not tear you down. In your faith walk, there will be mountains and there will be valleys, but know that God is the God of the mountain and the valley. Stay encouraged my brothers and look for more encouraging articles and friends to help build you up on your faith journey. Please remember that you are not in this alone!
